Jason Elstrott was born on the 19th of April in 1976. He grew up in New Orleans, Louisiana, and then lived in Baton Rouge after attending College there. He graduated from Louisiana State University’s College of Art and Design in 2001.

Inspired by its diverse landscapes and natural beauty Jason moved to Costa Rica in 2005 and began a new series of paintings. Many of the landscape paintings Jason does are done on site rather than using photographs. This frequently requires working around bad weather and traveling over dangerous roads in order to return to the same scene several times to capture consistent lighting. The goal is to capture the energy of a scene in a way that is not possible with a photograph.

Jason moved back to the US in 2008 with his new wife Gaby. Upon returning to the US jason and his wife drove from the Atlantic to the Pacific coast and much of the journey has been documented by paintings that can be found in the Recent Work section of the online gallery.

Jason now lives in Portland Oregon with his wife Gaby and son Nathaniel. His work is now on display at the Ataladia Gallery in Tamarindo and also at the Sanctuary Resort and Spa in San Juanillo, Costa Rica.
